The New Zealand Silver Ferns netball gold medalists are receiving their medals on tv as I write; they beat Australia within the last 45 minutes. This was the last event of what were a great games!England came third.
While Australia won a mountain of medals, and NZ probably under-achieved, our six golds were all notable.
In particular, by winning a blue riband event, the 1500 metres,Kiwi, Nick Willis, achieved what John Walker couldn't do in a Commonwealth Games -he won two silvers; he invoked the spirit of the late and legendary Jack Lovelock in the 1930's; recalled the power of the mighty Peter Snell in the 1960',and strongly suggested a new "Black Singlet" dynasty was possible in coming years.
Lovelock,Snell and Walker all won Olympic 1500m golds and set world records in their eras. Snell won two 800m golds as well.
Nick Willis is uncannily similar in build to the young Walker, and won easily in the end - the race was an eventful one.He is also a born again Christian and claimed a thousand people prayed for him daily; the prayers were certainly answered?
