NZ's Zespri helping Japan quake relief...
    :p

Zespri's first shipment this year of kiwifruit to Japan is also carrying 30,000 litres of packaged water for relief efforts.

Zespri's first shipment this year of kiwifruit to Japan is also carrying 30,000 litres of packaged water for relief efforts.

The MV Haru Verdy has already left Tauranga bound for Kobe and Tokyo and a second ship is due to leave early next week.

Supply Chain Manager, Sally Gardiner, says Zespri has been monitoring the situation in Japan since the earthquake and tsunami.

She says they're concerned not only for the Zespri's 17 staff, but also for the well being of their customers and distributors with whom they've forged strong bonds.

Mr Gardiner is thanking other companies that have contributed to getting the shipment of water to Japan. They include the operators of the M.V. Haru Verdy, who are shipping the water free of charge.

Ms Gardiner said the new season kiwifruit is due to arrive in-market in Japan in mid-April.

“Our suppliers in Japan tell us that demand for ZESPRI® Kiwifruit remains strong, and based on this, our export programme to Japan will continue as planned,” Ms Gardiner said.

“Shortly after these initial shipments to Japan, shipments of ZESPRI® GREEN, GOLD and ORGANIC kiwifruit will begin to other key markets in Asia, Europe and North America.

“The 2011 season is on track to be a strong one. Early indications are that the volume produced during the 2011 season will be similar to last year’s, with around 100 million trays of kiwifruit being exported,” Ms Gardiner said.

In the coming months, around 25,000 people, mostly seasonal workers, will be employed by the New Zealand kiwifruit industry to harvest, pack and ship ZESPRI® GREEN, GOLD and ORGANIC kiwifruit, injecting millions of dollars into the New Zealand economy.

Alzheimers disease is a debilitating disease...

    By Peter Petterson

    First published at Qondio:

An old post from 2008 I have recycled::**:

Alzheimers disease is reportedly a brain disease named after Alois Alzheimer who first described the condition in 1906.

Alzheimers has been described as a progressive, debilitating and fatal brain disease that destroys the brain cells, causing problems and loss of memory, thought and severe behavioural problems that affect work, relationships, lifelong hobbies, activities and social life. It worsens over time and has no cure at present, although there are some drugs being tested which show some potential.

It has been described as the most common form of dementia, a general term for loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.

While there is no cure as described above, symptoms can be treated along with social and health support services in the earlier stages of the disease. In the latter stages most sufferers end their days in nursing homes.

New York governor's dilemma - look after the rich or the deprived...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is facing a choice: Throw thousands of homeless kids into the streets of New York -- or give tax breaks to millionaires.

You heard that right. Gov. Cuomo may approve a budget this week that includes drastic cuts for homeless youth services -- cuts that will slash funding to state homeless shelters by more than half, forcing thousands of kids out of shelter beds and onto the streets of New York.

That includes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young adults, who make up nearly one-third of New York City’s homeless youth population. These kids already have too few places to turn to for help. Many have been rejected by their families, forced to flee homophobic foster homes, or have experienced institutionalized homophobia from social service providers.

But there is a way for Gov. Cuomo to prevent these brutal cuts. As the New York Times editorial board wrote last week, he can try to extend the “high earner surcharge” on the top 2.8% of New York taxpayers, which is set to expire at the end of the year.

With the state budget due April 1, time is running out for Gov. Cuomo to reinstate funding for youth homeless services. Click here to join more than 17,000 Change.org members in signing an urgent petition telling Gov. Cuomo not to balance New York’s budget on the backs of homeless kids.

As our friends at the Ali Forney Center, a homeless shelter for LGBT young adults in New York City, have told the Cuomo administration, the impact of these budget cuts could be devastating for homeless LGBT kids. LGBT homeless youth are at profound risk of harm if left on the streets, experiencing increased rates of drug use, depression, risk of violence, and a high possibility of being exposed to STDs, including HIV.

Indeed, more than 60 percent of all homeless youth report considering or attempting suicide because they feel like they have no place to go, and no one who supports them.

Please sign the urgent petition below and send the Cuomo administration the message that cutting youth shelter beds is no way to solve a budget problem.

    http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-gov-cuomo-dont-abandon-lgbt-homeless-youth?alert_id=SWJnrOHxWJ_VAyXVrBGjD&me=aa

Your support right now could make a big difference to these kids. Thanks for taking action and telling Gov. Cuomo to do the right thing.

Liquid gold the green answer for the natural energy resources of tomorrow...

B)Many environmentalists dream of a 'green future' - a world in which cars, homes and industries can rely on a clean, abundant and renewable resource such as wind and solar radiation. But that future may be as much mellow yellow as grassy green, thanks to another natural resource that most of us would not think of - urine.

Planet earth's nearly 8 billion people flush away an estimated 10 billion litres (2.6 billion gallons) of urine daily. Domestic animals such as cows and pigs contribute twice as much. Add to that the millions of sheep that make their own contribution as well.

Geraldine Botte, a chemical engineer at Ohio University in the US, thinks throwing all that money away is a waste of (literally) a golden opportunity. What urine contains is something that many scientists have called the fuel of the future - hydrogen.

Professor Botte claims they have made a breakthrough,, because hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. However it does not exist alone but in combination with other elements. An economical method must be found to break those chemical bonds. And that is just what she and her team at Ohio University are actually doing; they are confident that success is just on the horizon. Pee power is close to a reality!

  • England's tsunami of 1607...

I have discussed an event that occurred in the 17th century - not in the south as I thought, but in the west of England and Wales. Please read below:>:(

    England's Tsunami of 1607...

An account of an early natural disaster and the effect it had on the West of England and Wales

The world was horrified by the tsunami that struck Asia several years ago. To most of us, it was the first time we’d heard the word, the first time such a terrifying incident could strike out of the blue, without warning.

An Account from England and Wales:

But it has happened before, many centuries ago near the Bristol Channel in England. The following is based on an account in The Gentleman’s Magazine of 1762, printed in response to a report of a disastrous storm near Quesnoy, France. It quotes extensively from a pamphlet in the Harleian library which was written soon after the event in 1607. It is worth quoting in detail:

“On Tuesday January 27 about 9 in the morning, ‘the sunne being fayrly and bryghtly spred,’ huge and mighty hills of water were seen in the elements, tumbling one over another in such sort as if the greatest mountains in the world had overwhelmed the low vallies, to the inexpressible astonishment and terror of the spectators, who, at first, mistaking it for a great mist, or fog, did not on the sudden prepare to make their escape from it; but on its nearer approach, which came on with such swiftness as it was verily thought the fowls of the air could not fly so fast; they perceived that it was the violence of the waters of the raging seas, which seemed to have broken their bounds, and were pouring in to deluge the whole land, and then happy were they that could fly the fastest. But as violent and swift were the huge waves, and they pursuing one another with such rapidity that in less than 5 hours space, most part of the countries on the Severn’s banks were laid under water, and many hundreds of men, women, and children, perished in the floods. From the hills might be seen herds of cattle, and flocks of sheep, with husbandmen labouring in the fields, all swept away together, and swallowed up in one dreadful inundation. Houses, barns, ricks of corn and hay, were all involved in the common ruin. Many who were rich in the morning were beggars before noon, and several perished in endeavouring to save their effects

  • 20 metre tsunami feared if Mururoa atoll breaks off...

Polynesians fear 20 metre tsunami from Mururoa atoll...

French scientist warns that part of radioactive Mururoa atoll could break off and trigger a tsunami...

The president of French Polynesia has asked France to send scientists to assess the risk that the Mururoa atoll, which was used as a nuclear bomb test site for 30 years, could collapse into the Pacific Ocean and unleash a tsunami 20 metres high on the surrounding islands.

Polynesians have been watching the events in Japan - caused by a 10-metre high tsunami - with mounting alarm. The fear that part of the Mururoa atoll might collapse into the sea is not new. Back in 1997, one year after the final, highly controversial, nuclear test, an official report referred to the risk.

Now locals have seized on an admission by a French nuclear safety official, Marcel Jurien de la Graviere, that "the possibility of a collapse of part of the Mururoa atoll cannot be ruled out".

President Gaston Tong Sang writes in his letter to his opposite number Nicolas Sarkozy that there is disquiet among French Polynesians, who fear not only a 20-metre high tsunami washing over their islands, but also the release of radioactive material which has so far been entombed in the atoll. De la Graviere suggested that people on nearby Tureia atoll could be exposed to radiation 300 times the level in France.

Meanwhile, locals have told ABC News that there are places on Mururoa atoll where the road has sunk two metres below sea level and that there are huge cracks in the coral.

Tong Sang wants Paris to set up an alarm system, although its usefulness would be questionable given that Tureia has a maximum elevation of a few metres and is only 70 miles away from Mururoa.

After waiting 20 minutes before receiving her meal, the self-described "first-time spring breaker" allegedly hurled her food at employees, jumped on the counter, pulled a manager's hair and struck workers with a charity jar filled with coins, The Smoking Gun reports.

A YouTube video of the incident shows other Burger King patrons -- some of them also in bikinis -- tossing napkins and a chair around the fast food joint.

When officers attempted to restrain the suspect, Smith allegedly said, "Take your damn hands off me, you can't touch me."

According to the website, Smith felt she and her friends were being mistreated from the moment they entered the eatery.

"When I walked in, they had no smiles on their faces. We weren't treated fairly," she reportedly said. "If I knew what was gonna happen, I would've gone to Taco Bell."

Former Apollo 14 Astronaut Claims Aliens Visit Our Planet...

According to former NASA astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, there have been a number of messages from the aliens but governments had classified the truth for over 60 years.

Mitchell, who was one of the astronauts who took part in the Apollo 14 mission, said that he knew of several UFO visits to our planet during his career in NASA, but all of them remained top secret.

Edgar Mitchell has a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering, as well as a Doctor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Now Dr Mitchell is 77 and during one of his radio interviews he mentioned that sources at NASA who came in contact with aliens described them as "little people who look strange to us". The former astronaut said that the earth's "guests" had the look similar to Hollywood images, i.e. small frame, large eyes and big head.

It is worth mentioning that Dr Mitchell was the 6th astronaut to step on the surface of the moon. He set a record of the number of walks on the moon, while Alan Shepard set a record for the longest moon walk - 9 hours and 17 minutes.

The interview with Mr Mitchell was arranged to coincide with the premier of second X-Files movie. During the interview he mentioned that the technology developed by humans was "not nearly as sophisticated" as the one used by aliens, but warned: "Had they been hostile ... we would be gone by now".

"I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real. It's been well covered up by all our governments for the last 60 years or so, but slowly it's leaked out and some of us have been privileged to have been briefed on some of it," Daily Telegraph newspaper quoted Dr Edgar Mitchell as saying.

Some UFO theorists consider that Roswell, located in New Mexico, was the place where a UFO crashed back in 1947.

"I've been in military and intelligence circles who know that beneath the surface of what has been public knowledge, yes, we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been happening quite a bit."

According to Dr Mitchell, Roswell was indeed the site of UFO crash and similar UFO visits are still being investigated.

In an interview he told Nick Margerrison, the host of Kerrang! Radio: "This is really starting to open up. I think we're headed for real disclosure and some serious organizations are moving in that direction."

Nick Margerrison was quoted by The Telegraph as saying: "I thought I'd stumbled on some sort of astronaut humor but he was absolutely serious that aliens are definitely out there and there's no debating it."

In a response to Dr Mitchell's claims, NASA's spokesman said: "NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover-up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe. Dr Mitchell is a great American, but we do not share his opinions on this issue."

“Father.. During World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighborhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic.”

The priest replied: “That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that.”

The priest said, “That was a long time ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger, but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven.”

The Moses Code - a new truth or recycled deception...
    :?:

    by Peter Petterson

First published at Qondio in 2008:

The Moses Code: What is the Moses Code? Fact or fiction. Incredible miracles. Law of Attraction. A new truth or recycled deception? A number of questions need to be answered.
I must say I had never heard of the Moses Code until reading the latest copy of THE GOOD NEWS. There is a new book, a DVD and a movie all of which claim the Moses Code promises the power to transform the world through a secret method supposedly revealed to Moses. But what is the story behind this revealed secret - The Law of Attraction?

On the cover of the newest New Age best seller THE MOSES CODE, author and movie producer James Twyman promises to reveal the secret for the "most powerful manifestation tool in the history of the world". Thats a huge claim!

Thirty five hunded years ago this technology was allegedly used to create some of the most incredible miracles the world has ever seen. Now you can allegedly use this secret - the Moses Code - to help manifest a new world yourself. The new movie "The Moses Code" will teach you how to use the Law of Attraction.

This big secret is allegedly "an ancient technique that has existed in the world for more than 3500 years, but was hidden away long ago because authorities decided it was too powerful to be arbitarily wielded." I bet it was!

So therefore the authors of the Bible - 'The Truth' - arbitarily decided it should not be included in the word of God. Other spiritual leaders who had evolved to the point of understanding the 'Code' and practised it, and had extraordinary results with it, including Jesus Christ, didn't want it passed on; and as a consequence it wasn't included in the New Testament either. Extraordinary indeed!

James Tyman claims the Moses Code will transform your life! Indeed, but whose truth is actually contained in it?

    http://www.themosescode.com/

But is the code actually a deception? Read the "Moses Code Deception" by Christopher Lawson,March 10 2008.Or is it really channelled occult teachings?

    http://www.spiritual-research-network.com/themosescde.html

    http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Moses-Code&id=1099075

Today the story is allegedly different - mankind is undergoing a spiritual revolution. For the first time in our history man is realising his true potential. Really?

The Moses Code is made up of two words: I Am. The letters indicate that man is the ruler of his own destiny; I Am means that a human being is one with God and has the power to manifest miracles previously thought impossible.

It believes that we all have a part of God or the Supreme Being in us. We can, therefore, manifest what we want in our lives.

The code tells us that we already have the abilty but follow the code in the wrong way. http://www.law-of-attraction-outlined.com

The apostle Paul told people to "test all things" they are taught to prove whether these things are truthful. Seeking the truth never means leaving your brain at the door. Indeed!

    First published at Qondio:

This is an old post from a couple of years ago I thought I would brush off and recycle.8|

The most comprehensive British Government files on UFO activity are opened to the public for the first time today and they disclose that even airtraffic controllers and police officers have seen mysterious craft in the skies over Britain.

The sightings are recorded on official forms held by air bases and police stations, and were compiled by the Defence Ministry between 1978 and 2002.

Disclosed for the first time is a report from three experienced controllers who tried to "talk in" a UFO that landed on the runway before them.

The incident occurred on April 19, 1984, at an East Anglian airfield. The unidentified object came in at speed , made a touch and go on a runway then departed at terrfic speed in a near verticle climb, according to the files.

It was described as a "brilliant solid ball of light, bright silvery in colour". The file noted that "witnesses do not wish to be identified in case their professional integrity is questioned".

Over the next four years more than 150 files will be made available at the National Archive in Kew, southwest London.

The stories continue. Files have been opened after many years, some going back to the late 1940's and early 1950's.

An accidental discovery by an Australian eye expert may hold the key to better management of people with diabetes, a condition that affects 200,000 Kiwis out of a population of 4.3 million.

Nathan Efron, a professor at the Queensland Univeristy of Technology's School of Optometry, made the discovery after using a special microscope, called a corneal confocal microscope, which he thought would help in his research into how contact lenses affect the eye.

Instead, its extreme magnification allowed Effron to see fine nerves in the cornea that had never been seen before.

Effron, who has Type 2 diabetes, knew that one of the serious consequences of the disease is diabetic neuropathy - a condition that causes nerve damage and can result in ulcers and amputations. It affects half of diabetics in varying degrees.

A five year study is now under way to discover whether technology can be used to monitor nerve degeneration over time. This could lead to early testing for diabetic neuropathy that will motivate sufferers to better manage their disease.

  • Prehistoric mammoth scanned...

Russian scientists recently obtained detailed images of a mammoth's internal organs. The animal - three to four months old when it died many thousands of years ago - was found intact in the ice of the Yamalo-Nenets region of Arctic Russia.

"This is the best preserved:?: specimen not only of the mammoth, but of any prehistoric animal," said Alexei Tikhonov, the deputy director of the Russian Academy of Science's Zoological Institute. Computer tomography, similar to that used to scan human patients, showed no sign of injuries.

That the mammoth's airways and digestive system were "clogged" with what appears to be silt leads scientist to the conclusion that the animal must have drowned. The mammoth is a prehistoric ancestor of the modern elephant.

  • Tibet: An occupied country...

    :**:

    TIBET: AN OCCUPIED COUNTRY...

    A Long History of Sovereignty:

While China claims that Tibet has always been a part of China, Tibet has a history of at least 1300 years of independence from China. In 821 China and Tibet ended almost 200 years of fighting with a treaty engraved on three stone pillars, one of which still stands in front of the Jokhang cathedral in Lhasa.

The treaty reads in part: Both Tibet and China shall keep the country and frontiers of which they are now possessed. The whole region to the East of that being the country of Great China and the whole region to the West being assuredly the country of Great Tibet, from either side there shall be no hostile invasion, and no seizure of territory… and in order that this agreement establishing a great era when Tibetans shall be happy in Tibet and Chinese shall be happy in China shall never be changed, the Three Jewels, the body of Saints, the sun and the moon, planets and stars have been invoked as witness.

The three stone pillars were erected, one outside the Chinese Emperor’s palace, one on the border between the two countries, and one in Lhasa.

During the 13th and 14th centuries both China and Tibet came under the influence of the Mongol empire. China claims today that Tibet and China during that time became one country, by virtue of the Mongols domination of both nations. In validating this claim, it must first be remembered that virtually all of Asia was dominated by the Mongols under Kublai Khan and his successors, who ruled the largest empire in human history. Second, the respective relationships between the Mongols and the Tibetans and between the Mongols and Chinese must be examined. These two relationships were not only radically different in nature, but they also started and ended at different times. Tibet came under Mongol influence before Kublai Khan’s conquest of China and regaining complete independence from the Mongols several decades before China regained its independence.

While China was militarily conquered by the Mongols, the Tibetans and the Mongols established the historically unique “priest patron” relationship, also known as CHO-YON. The Mongol aristocracy had converted to Buddhism and sought spiritual guidance and moral legitimacy for the rule of their vast empire from the Tibetan theocracy. As Tibet’s patrons they pledged to protect it against foreign invasion. In return Tibetans promised loyalty to the Mongol empire.

The Mongol-Tibetan relationship was thus based on mutual respect and dual responsibility. In stark contrast, the Mongol-Chinese relationship was based on military conquest and domination. The Mongols ruled China, while the Tibetans ruled Tibet. The Mongol empire ended in the mid-14th century.

In 1639, the Dalai Lama established another CHO-YON relationship, this time with the Manchu Emperor, who in 1644 conquested China and established the Qing Dynasty.

By the middle of the 19th century, the Munchu influence in Tibet had waned considerably as the Manchu empire began to disintegrate. In 1842 and 1856 the Manchus were incapable of responding to Tibetan calls for assistance against repeated Nepalese Gorkha invasion. The Tibetans drove back the Gorkhas with no assistance and concluded bilateral treaties.

In 1911 the CHO-YON relationship came to its final end with the fall of the Manchu Dynasty. Tibet formally declared its Independence in 1912 and continued to conduct itself as a fully sovereign nation until its invasion by Communist China an 1949.

    1. Tibet governed itself without foreign influence, conducted its own Foreign affairs, had its own army and operated its own postal system. Tibet sovereignty was recognised by its neighbours as well as by Britain, with whom Tibet entered into a series of treaties regarding travels and trade.

    2. 1904 Britain invaded Tibet and subsequently Convention agreed between Tibet and Britain
    .
    3. 1912 The last of the Chinese troops expelled from Tibet and Dalai Lama proclaims Tibet Independence.

    4. During the Second World War Tibet remained neutral, despite strong pressure from the USA, Britain and China to allow the passage of raw materials through Tibet.

    5. Tibet conducted its international relations primarily by dealing with British, Chinese, Nepalese and Bhutanese diplomatic missions in Lhasa, but also through government delegations traveling abroad. When India became independent, the British Mission in Lhasa was replaced by an Indian one.
    How can I help?

It’s just $20 per year to join FRIENDS OF TIBET. Keep yourself informed of the current event in New Zealand and Internationally relating to the Tibetan cause. You will receive a bi-monthly newsletter.

    6. When Nepal applied for membership of the United Nations in 1949, it cited its treaty and diplomatic relations with Tibet to demonstrate its full international personality.

    7. If Tibet was part of China, then there was no need for the 17 point agreement which was forced upon the Tibetan delegation to sign in China in 1951 and then China announced to the world that Tibet was liberated (from whom?).

    8. From 1951 to 1959 China broke every promise that she made towards Tibet, resulting in the Tibetan uprising against China in March 1959. His Holiness the Dalai Lama and 100,000 Tibetans escaped into exile. From that day onwards Tibet affectively became an occupied country.

    9. Today from the legal standpoint, Tibet to this day has not lost its statehood. It is an independent state under illegal occupation. Neither China’s military invasion nor the continuing occupation by PLA has transferred the sovereignty of Tibet to China.

As pointed out earlier, the Chinese government has not claimed to have acquired sovereignty over Tibet by conquest. Indeed, China recognises that the use or threat of force (outside the exceptional circumstances provided for in the UN charter), the imposition of an unequal treaty or the continued illegal occupation of a country can never grant an invader legal title to territory. Its claims are based solely on the alleged subjection of Tibet to a few of China’s strongest foreign rulers in the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries.

How can China – one of the most ardent opponents of imperialism and colonialism – excuse its continued presence in Tibet, against the wishes of Tibetan people, by citing as justification Mongols and Manchu imperialism and its own colonial policies?

    - Dr. Michael C Van Walt Van Pragg (International Lawyer) The Status of Tibet
    10. 28th October 1991, US Congress under a Foreign Authorisation Act passed the resolution wherein they recognised “Tibet, including those areas incorporated into the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu and Qinghai, AN OCCUPIED COUNTRY under the established principal of international law”. The resolution further stated that Tibet’s true representative is the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile as recognised by the Tibetan people.

  • What the Qur'an teaches: the same old faith...

What the Qur’an teaches: The same old faith...

In the name of God, the Lord of Grace, the Ever Merciful

His are the keys of the heavens and the earth. He gives abundant sustenance, or gives it in scant measure to whomever He wills. He has full knowledge of everything. In matters of faith, He has ordained for you the same as He had enjoined on Noah — that which We have revealed to you (Muhammad) — and as We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus: ‘Steadfastly uphold the faith and do not divide into factions.’ Hard for the idolaters is that which you call on them to accept. God draws to Himself whoever He pleases and guides to Himself everyone who turns to Him. (Consultation, Al-Shoora: 42: 12-13)

We discussed the verses that make clear that judgment in all people’s disputes belong to God alone. Given that He makes His judgment final in all disputes, this can only mean that this rule is based on the fact that having originated the heavens and the earth and set their laws in operation, He continues to hold their keys: “His are the keys of the heavens and the earth.”

Since mankind are only part of what lives in the heavens and earth, the same fact applies to them, which means that the keys and treasures of the universe belong to God. Moreover, it is He who provides them with sustenance, determining its measure in the same way as He conducts all affairs: “He gives abundant sustenance, or gives it in scant measure to whomever He wills.” It is He who gives them the food they eat and the water they drink, providing everything they need in their lives. Can they, then, refer to anyone else for judgment in their affairs? It is the most natural procedure for people to turn to the One who controls all this according to His perfect knowledge: “He has full knowledge of everything.” Needless to say, the One who knows everything is the One who can make a final judgment in all fairness.

This is just one example of how the meanings of the component parts of the surah’s verses converge in complete harmony and perfect subtlety to work on the human heart. It is akin to the harmonious tones that combine to make a superb melody.

The surah began with a general reference to the unity of the source of all divine faiths: “Thus has God, the Almighty, the Wise, sent revelation to you, Prophet, and to those who preceded you.” (Verse 3) Now it gives more details of this fact, pointing out that the legislation God has enacted for Muslims is, in essence, the same as He legislated for Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, requiring them all to establish the divine faith and not to split into factions over it. This requires that they, in turn, steadfastly pursue the divine code of living, paying no heed to the desires of those who fall into dispute. This divine faith is thus meant to govern human life, while those who argue about God have no leg to stand on. They are the ones who are warned of the painful punishment they might incur.

This passage enjoys the same level of perfect harmony as the preceding one: “In matters of faith, He has ordained for you the same as He had enjoined on Noah — that which We have revealed to you (Muhammad) — and as We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus: Steadfastly uphold the faith and do not divide into factions.”

Thus the surah confirms the truth we explained at its very outset: God is the source of all divine religions, starting far back in history. A little touch is added here which has a pleasant, subtle effect on every believer. He or she looks out to see who were their predecessors on this long line only to find that they were those noble elite: Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be on them all). Every believer then realizes that he has joined their procession, traveling the same way they traveled. He will then enjoy his journey along that way, no matter how much trouble, persecution or deprivation he suffers. Who would not put up with trouble, knowing that it is only transient, when he is assured of the company of such an elite nobility?

Moreover, there is a profound sense of peace between believers in the one divine faith who implement His law. No conflict or dispute arises between them. They feel their strong bond urging them to collaborate and understand each other so that they can maintain the link between present and past.

Since the religion God ordained for the Muslims who believe in Muhammad is the same as He enjoined on Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, why do the followers of Moses and Jesus fight against each other? Indeed, what causes fighting between the followers of different Christian sects? Why do the followers of Moses and Jesus go to war against the followers of Muhammad? And why do those idolaters who claim to follow Abraham’s faith wage a war against Muslims? Should not all these group together under the one banner hoisted by God’s last Messenger? The same order was issued to them all: “Steadfastly uphold the faith and do not divide into factions.” Only when they unite under this banner do they uphold the faith, fulfil its duties, maintain its path and work under the same banner hoisted high in succession by Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus until it was eventually carried by Muhammad, who received the final testament.

Irish Luck - what goes around comes around...

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools

    and ran to the bog.

There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved.

'I want to repay you,' said the nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.'

'No, I can't accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel.

'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked.

    'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly.

'I'll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy If the lad is anything like his father, he'll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.' And that he did.

Farmer Fleming's son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin.

Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia.

What saved his life this time? Penicillin.

The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill .. His son's name?

    Sir Winston Churchill.

  • When humans lost their penile spines and began enjoying their sexual relationships......

This week from Britain: It is a genetic mutation for which all men and their sexual partners can be grateful for. Scientists have identified the stretch of DNA that caused the human penis to lose its spines.

While many other mammals including chimpanzees, macaque monkeys, cats and mice have hard bristles on the sides of their penis, the male sexual organ is mercifully smooth in human beings. This has been traced to the loss of a genetic switch that activates the growth of penile spines.

This mutation almost certainly evolved as human beings became monogamous. As well as causing discomfort for the female, spines make the penis more sensitive and thus shorten the length of intercourse. Their loss would have made sex more satisfying, promoting pair bonding.

This discovery, published recently in the journal NATURE, offers important insights into human evolution. The research was done by by scientists at Stanford University in California.

    Aussies adrift on the ocean...

Two Aussies are adrift in a lifeboat. While rummaging through the boat's provisions one of them finds an old lamp. He rubs the lamp and a genie suddenly appears. This genie tells them that he only grants one wish.

Without giving much thought to the matter, the lamp finder blurts out, "Turn the entire ocean into VB!(Victorian Bitter)

The genie claps his hands with a deafening crash, and immediately the entire sea turns into beer.

The genie disappears and only the gentle lapping of beer on the hull breaks the stillness as the two men considered their circumstances.

The second Aussie turns to the first and says, "Nice going mate! Now we're going to heaven.

A Kiwi bloke was doing a haka...

Kiwi bloke was on earth doing the Haka. Somewhere in space, Aliens were watching this unusual dance.

    "Kamate, kamate, ka-ora, ka-ora......"

The Aliens were very interested and they wanted to see what would happen if they would take a part of his brain away without him even knowing. So with their alien technology they sent a laser beam down that hit the Kiwi's head and took a part of his brain away.

The Aliens then sat back to see what would happen.

    "Ka-mate, ka-mate, ka-ora, ka-ora......."

What the??? The Aliens were amazed with what they were seeing. The Kiwi guy could operate with less than a full brain. So they decided to send the beam down and take another part of his brain. The Aliens watched on.

    "Ka-mate, ka-mate, ka-ora, ka-ora......"

"WHAT!!!" the Aliens said to each other. "These Kiwis are very clever people even with half a brain. Let's see what happens if we take the rest of it away and leave him with no brain at all!"

So with a push of a button the Aliens sent the beam down and took away the final part of the Kiwi's brain.

"Now surely he won't know anything at all.He should be too dumb and stupid to do anything now?"

And sure enough, with no brain and no knowledge of anything at all as the Aliens watched on the bloke sang,

    "WALTZING MATILDA, WALTZING MATILDA......"

  • "The Spitfire"...

    "The Spitfire"...
    B)

George Kerevan of The Scotsman has written a wonderful tribute to the Spitfire on the occasion of its 75th anniversary. An article that I just had to draw your attention to for its poignancy and the skill of its writing. The article is simply entitled- "The Spitfire - An Appreciation". You won't read anything like it in the NZ Herald.

75 years ago today, as darkness loomed across Europe, an achingly beautiful aircraft soared into the heavens on its maiden flight. The plane would become both an eight-gunned instrument of freedom and a near-spiritual symbol of it. The Spitfire was born.

AT 4:35pm on the afternoon of 5 March, 1936, a pilot called Joseph 'Mutt' Summers walked across the grass of Southampton Airport - currently a hub for Flybe. Summers had spent a tiring day testing a new RAF bomber. Now, he had to squeeze in the first flight of a new fighter called the "Spitfire". A plane that would become a legend and - arguably - hold the pass in 1940 long enough to save us from fascism.

[..]The Spitfire was the inspired creation of a true engineering genius, Reginald Joseph Mitchell. He was born in 1895, the son of two Stoke-on-Trent primary school teachers. His poor background precluded university, so he began an engineering apprenticeship with a locomotive builder.

[..] The Spitfire is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever designed. One Battle of Britain veteran later called it "flying totty". Its trademark elliptical wing curves like a piece of Lalique glass. But the wing was more than an ornament. It gave the Spit the manoeuvrability and turn of speed that proved the edge over the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitts during the Battle of Britain.

These are just excerpts. If you're interested in this kind of stuff, please go and read the full article, it is well worth it. Mr. Kerevan finishes off thus-

The nearest the non-pilot will ever get to what it felt like to sit alone in the cockpit of a Spit is a poem by John Gillespie Magee, a Scots-Irish American who came to Britain in 1941 to fight the Nazis:

    "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth;
    "And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
    "Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth;
    "Of sun-lit clouds - and done a hundred things;
    "You have not dreamed of…
    "And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod;
    "The high untrespassed sanctity of space;
"Put out my hand and touched the face of God."

On 11 December, 1941, Magee was killed when his parachute failed to open. He was 19. At a time when the RAF is being cut to shreds, we should remember the Spit. But we should also remember the men and women who built it and flew it.

I have to reflect too on a man like Magee, who wrote that wonderful poem at 19, but more, came from America to the UK just to fight against the Nazis. At that young age. And what of today's youth with their nihilistic worldviews and their cellphones and their gaming? Would they go and fly that plane and shoot down other men in planes? Would they write such a poem? A more stark measure of what we have lost would be hard to come by.

  • NZ can learn from Christchurch earthquake - engineers claim...

NZ can learn from Christchurch earthquake - engineer's claim...

The Christchurch community hope to see their iconic Cathedral rebuilt. Photo / Mark Mitchell
New Zealand should be more aggressive in making buildings able to withstand earthquakes and can learn from Christchurch's devastating quake, a leading structural engineer says.

President of the Structural Engineers Society John Hare, who is working with an urban search and rescue team at the badly damaged Christchurch Cathedral, said Christchurch may have been "a little passive" in strengthening its buildings.

The same could be said for other centres nationwide, such as Auckland, Mr Hare said.

"I would hate to have an earthquake in Auckland, because I don't think there has been very much done about it at all, I think people have been very complacent," he said.

"I think a lot of engineers perhaps were not listened to."

Because modern earthquake standards only took off in the mid '70s, it was important to retrofit buildings built before to reduce the level of damage in an earthquake.

The aim for designers was to make buildings able to withstand a one in 500 year earthquake event and hopefully a one in 2500 year event.

"What we've had was pretty much equivalent to a one in 2500 year event, or maybe even more," he said.

"I think people may be fooled by the fact it was only a magnitude 6.3 earthquake... magnitude is one measure - you have also got to consider things like depth and proximity."

With the devastation caused by Christchurch's earthquake "fresh in the mind", Mr Hare hoped New Zealand would be more aggressive in strengthening buildings in the future.

"I talked to a builder a few days ago... who said 'when we were doing some of that work you told us to do we used to think you were going over the top, but now I'll never say that again'."

"Preparedness is the answer, the better prepared we are the lower the impact would be," Mr Hare said.

Thomas Heaton, professor of engineering seismology at Caltech in Los Angeles told the LA Times that New Zealand was not the only country which could learn from the quake.

California, which has multiple fault lines running under it, had similar problems when it came to quake strengthening building as New Zealand, Mr Heaton said.

A big concern was the damage to concrete-framed office buildings erected in the '60s and '70s, which California had a lot of, Mr Heaton said.

"People who are living and working in these buildings are largely unaware that they're in buildings that are deemed by most professionals to be dangerous."

The immediate priorities for engineers following the quake was helping with the rescue and recovery operation, determining which buildings were safe and trying to get essential services back online.

Mr Hare said he dreaded to think how long it would take to restore some services.

Time capsule found buried in rubble of earthquake shaken Christchurch...

Nothing good can come out of a disaster that has shaken Christchurch to its core, but there was a brief shimmer of light today when a piece of history was uncovered amongst the earthquake ruins.

The capsule was discovered by rescue teams while working near the destroyed statue of pioneer John Robert Godley, the New Zealand Herald reports.

The copper capsule and broken bottle are thought to have been put there when the statue was first erected in 1867.

A handwritten note was found in the bottle, but details of what it says have not yet been released.

Mayor Bob Parker said he believed that inside the time capsule were documents outlining the vision of the city.

Canterbury Museum director Anthony Wright said it was a wonderful discovery amid all the sad news of the earthquake.
